What makes Riese & Müller different

There are a lot of e-bikes in the world, and Riese & Müller sit at the top of the category for specific reasons. They have been making bikes in Germany since 1993 — starting in a Darmstadt workshop with a folding bike that won the Special Award at the Hesse Innovation Award, and that same obsessive engineering instinct is what eventually made them one of the earliest brands to go all-in on electric. Over thirty years later, they still assemble every bike to order in Germany and still obsess over the kind of details that only matter once you have been riding the same bike for five years and it still feels right.

Built in Germany, made to order

Every R&M is assembled in Mühltal, Germany, to your specification. That matters because it keeps quality consistent and reduces waste — no warehouse full of bikes nobody wanted. Building to order also means the bike is configured around your life: the motor, battery and gearing you need, plus the accessories that make it work — Maxi-Cosi adapters for a baby, the MIK system for one-click baskets and child seats, a Dog Kit, weather covers and more. It also means lead times can vary, which is something we will always be upfront with you about.

Drive systems chosen with purpose

R&M uses Bosch across most of the range — the most proven e-bike drive system in the industry, reliable, widely serviced and fully connected via the Bosch Smart System. In practice that means the bike works with the Bosch eBike Flow app for navigation, ride and activity tracking, and the eBike Lock function that immobilises the motor when you walk away — and because the system is connected and regularly updated, the bike gains new features and improvements over time. On their higher-specification models, they also offer the Pinion MGU — motor and gearbox in a single sealed unit, with a 12-speed system that needs virtually no mechanical maintenance. The exception is the lightweight UBN city range, which runs a compact Fazua drive rather than Bosch.

Full suspension where it counts

Most R&M bikes — including the cargo and family models — come with full suspension, which R&M call Control Technology. It pairs front suspension with a rear swing arm and, crucially, a co-sprung luggage carrier: the rack is fixed to the main frame, so whatever you are carrying moves with the suspension rather than rattling over a rigid rear rack. On London's potholes, dropped kerbs and cobbles, with children or shopping on board, that keeps the bike planted and composed even fully loaded. It is not a luxury — it is the difference between a bike you enjoy riding and one you merely tolerate.

Designed to be repaired, not replaced

R&M build bikes to be kept, not thrown away — and that conviction runs right through them. Components are made to be serviced and replaced rather than sealed in; frames use recycled aluminum wherever it makes sense, and clean cable routing keeps wear and maintenance down. These are bikes meant to be ridden hard for years and handed on, not landfilled in three. That only works with a workshop behind it, which is where we come in: we service and repair the bikes we sell, so yours stays on the road for the long haul.

We build and safely check every bike in our own workshop before you collect it: a full pre-delivery inspection, so the bike you ride away is set up properly. Your first health check is then free at 500km, once everything has bedded in.

Frequently asked questions about Riese & Müller

Some are, some aren't. Models and configurations we sell regularly — such as the Multitinker2 Family, Nevo and popular Vario builds — are kept in stock at Flying Dutchman and are available to order directly through our website or by contacting us. Less common specifications, particular colour or gearing combinations are built to order in Mühltal, Germany, which means a longer lead time. If you need a bike by a specific date, get in touch and we will tell you exactly what is available and when.

Mostly Bosch — by far the most common and best-supported e-bike system and fully integrated with the Bosch Smart System. Which one depends on the bike. City and commuter models use the Bosch Performance Line in its various forms, from the lightweight SX on the Culture to the powerful Performance Line CX on the Charger; the cargo and family bikes use the Cargo Line, tuned for strong, steady pull when you are carrying children or a heavy load. The lightweight UBN city bikes are the exception — they use the compact, quiet Fazua Ride 60 instead, which is part of what makes them the lightest bikes in the range. And on higher-specification models like the Charger5 and Nevo5, R&M offer the Pinion MGU, which combines motor and 12-speed gearbox in a single sealed unit at the crank with virtually no mechanical maintenance. Different drives for different jobs, all well-suited to London riding — we can talk you through which makes sense for your bike when you come in.

R&M offers a two-year statutory warranty on new bikes, plus a five-year guarantee specifically covering frame and rear swingarm breakage. On top of that, they provide a voluntary two-year battery warranty guaranteeing at least 60% capacity after two years or 500 full charge cycles, whichever comes first. To activate the extended guarantees, you need to register your bike online within four weeks of purchase — something we will remind you to do and help you with when you collect.

Because they are built to a different standard — one where ten years of daily riding is the expectation, not the exception. Every R&M is assembled to order in Germany, uses the most proven drive systems available, and is designed with repairability in mind from the start. The five-year frame guarantee and two-year battery warranty are not marketing — they reflect how these bikes are actually made. For anyone using a bike every day, in all weathers, carrying children or commuting serious distances, the difference shows over time in ways that are hard to quantify upfront and impossible to ignore once you have owned one. Between 22kg and 40kg depending on the model — city bikes at the lighter end, cargo bikes at the heavier. The electric assist means weight is rarely something you notice on the move. For cargo bikes, the technique for maneuvering matters: hold the rear with one hand, steer the front with the other, and even a fully loaded Load5 moves with ease. If weight is a concern, come in and we will talk through the options.

Yes, and we strongly recommend it. Riding an R&M is the fastest way to understand whether the fit, the feel and the geometry work for you. Most models come in several frame sizes, and a few — like the Multicharger3 and other longtails — adjust tool-free to fit riders from roughly 150cm to 200cm, so sizing is rarely a barrier. The surest way to get it right is in person: we offer test rides at our London locations, and we will size you properly across the range — book an appointment, and we will set aside the time and the right bike for you.

It depends on how many children and how you like to ride. For one child on a longtail, the Multitinker is our most recommended starting point. For two children in a box, the Packster2 70 CT is nimble and manageable in the city. For larger families or those doing serious daily mileage with children on board, the Load5 75 with full suspension is hard to argue with. Yes. Like any bike ridden daily, an R&M benefits from regular servicing — and given what these bikes are asked to do (carrying children, heavy loads, year-round riding in all weathers), it matters more than it would on a lighter, simpler machine. Every bike we sell gets a full pre-delivery inspection before you collect it, and the first health check is free at 500km, once the cables and components have settled in. After that, our workshop is trained and equipped to service and repair R&M bikes — we will keep yours running properly so you do not have to think about it.

Yes. Riese & Müller bikes qualify for the Cycle to Work scheme, which lets you spread the cost through your employer's salary-sacrifice arrangement and make a genuine saving on a bike you will ride every day. We work with the main Cycle to Work providers — tell us which scheme your employer offers, and we will talk you through exactly how it applies to the Riese & Müller you have in mind, and what your monthly cost would look like. It is one of the most cost-effective ways onto an R&M, and we are happy to handle the process with you in store in London.

Better than most — which matters in London. Many current R&M bikes come with the RX Chip fitted as standard: an invisible, permanently installed tracker powered by the bike’s own battery, which keeps transmitting for a while even if the battery is removed. Through the free RX Connect app it gives you the bike’s real-time location, a digital motion alarm if it is moved, and automatic ride recording. On top of the standard frame lock, it is one of the more considered anti-theft systems on any production e-bike. Bikes ordered with the RX Chip also get a year of ConnectRide free, and on eligible models — including the Load5, Charger5, Packster2 70 CT, the performance range and the UBN line — a year of ConnectCare cover, R&M’s Europe-wide insurance that includes theft with recovery and replacement, accident and wear-part cover, and no excess. From the 2026 model year, every new model with the RX Chip as standard is covered. We will set the app up with you when you collect and talk through which model includes what.
